Reading Log 2023

I logged 82 books, and I know that there were a some I read and never even put in my journal. This year was particularly bad for tracking because I tried out not having a paper journal. At least with my paper journal, I was catching the ones I wasn’t logging most of the time. It is probably not that many that I missed. They are most likely either: non-fiction that I consume in a sitting or children/mg novels that I read before falling asleep.

I joined a local book club that meets virtually. The members are great fun and really read and engage with the books. We have an enthusiastic library support person at the Sylvan Way library. Have I mentioned how much I love Kitsap Regional Library? They are wonderful. I love them.

Last year’s books include some that I really enjoyed - I gave 5 books 5 stars this year!

  • Game Changer by Neal Shusterman
  • Dragons at Crumbling Castle: And Other Tales
  • Max and the Midknights (Max and the Midknights, #1)
  • The Probability of Everything
  • Demon Copperhead

Of all of those, Demon Copperhead is the most powerfully written - holy my goodness. Read this book. Or listen to it, like I did. This is the most compelling narrative of so many social tragedies. Barbara Kingsolver is a genius with stories.

I only gave 1 star to 1 book this year: Roald Dahl’s Danny the Champion of the World. This book struck me so wrong. It started out swell, with an engaged father figure and a curious kid. It quickly morphed into an advertisement and celebration of poaching and making bad choices.

There are several books I did not finish (DNF) this year. I feel like I am doing a better job of abandoning stories that are not meeting my reading goals - which are namely enjoyment and learning. I can enjoy and be entertained and learn from well-crafted hard stories, like Demon Copperhead, but I don’t need to force myself through badly written prose.
